Women in Art

I saw this from one of my Facebook contacts. It is amazing how many different kinds of beauty there are (it becomes especially interesting around the cubist period and after :) ). I think the same thing while walking around Toronto many days.

There aren’t very many “different” images of beauty presented here at all. All of the womyn have the same things in common; youth, white flawless skin, a docile expression, and fine features. To me the message here is that womyn of this demographic are the only humans worth celebrating for their beauty through art. Where is the male equivalent of this video? Are womyn painters ever inspired to paint beautiful men?

  1. True – but the samples were taken from Western art, which explains the white skin. And, I don’t agree with the ‘docile expression’ thing – I think some of them look rather strong and certain. I do like the variety of body types and looks – quite different from today’s conception of beauty which is very standardized.
