Leonardo DiCaprio – Strongest Leading Man in Hollywood
After seeing The Departed and Blood Diamond in the last month or so, I am concluding that Leonardo DiCaprio is now playing the strongest leading-men roles in Hollywood.
The characters he plays are strong but conflicted and very well acted (especially considering that many of the scenes in The Departed were ad-lib). His characters have a masculine quality that is real and recognizable – not stereotypical or frivolous – and they have a dignity to them. I recently read that Brad Pitt wants to play more roles like DiCaprio, which I agree with after seeing him over-act during his whole on-screen time in Babel. I do still adore some of his older roles though – Tristan Ludlow from Legends of the Fall is one of my favourite characters of all time. And who would have thought DiCaprio would be playing roles like this after Titanic?
After watching The Departed in its entirety, then putting the DVD back in and playing my favorite scenes again… I have been brainstorming about how I can put myself in a situation similar to Vera Farmiga’s role – stuck between Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon! Talk about a woman’s fantasy – thanks Scorsese! Knowing me I would have chosen the underdog anyway

I’ve been impressed with Leo for a long time. He was a great actor as a young kid (remember THis Boy’s Life and Whats Eating Gilbert Grape) and now he’s blossomed into a handsome, charismatic, leading man. It wasn’t hard for me to choose between Billy and Colin – no contest!
I like Leo. I am huge fan of Edward Norton however. Now there is a STRONG actor. ; )
I’m a Leonardo fan! He was also very good in Gangs of New York.
Have you seen the original version of The Departed? It’s a Chinese movie called “Infernal Affairs.” I actually preferred the Chinese version, although the American version tied the story together better.
I haven’t seen it yet but now I’m curious

My favorite Leo film would have to Basketball Diaries. It is an all round awesome film and there are some chilling scenes where Leo really shines. I was really happy to see him going deep again with Blood Diamond and Departed. In departed I feel the role was more dormant but powerful. He really expressed the stress and paranoia his character was going through without overkill. It is similar to Depp in Donnie Brasco and I belive Leo did a better job at it.
